Executive Assessment

The AC-130J Ghostrider is the final evolution of a lineage that began over Vietnam in 1967: a transport aircraft turned sideways, orbiting a target, delivering sustained precision fire from a pylon turn. Thirty-one aircraft, one command, six decades of accumulated doctrine.

It is also a platform whose service life now runs directly into a strategic argument it may not win.

First, the Ghostrider is the most capable gunship ever fielded, and that is not seriously disputed. The combination of a 105 mm cannon, a 30 mm chain gun, precision-guided munitions from wing pylons and internal launch tubes, and a modular architecture that absorbs upgrades faster than any predecessor gives AFSOC a persistence-and-precision capability no other airframe replicates. Second, it entered service optimised for an operating environment that has closed. Twenty years of Iraq and Afghanistan gave AC-130s uncontested airspace, unlimited loiter time, and adversaries without meaningful air defence. A slow, large, four-engine turboprop flying a predictable orbit is an extraordinary asset in that environment and an extraordinary liability outside it. (Confidence: Analysis, high)

Third, the proliferation of capable air defence to smaller states and non-state actors has moved the problem forward by years. This is no longer a China-in-2035 question. Recent operations across the Middle East have demonstrated that the threat floor has risen everywhere. (Confidence: Analysis, high)

Fourth, AFSOC's answer is standoff, and it is a serious one. The command is pursuing an AESA radar paired with the AGM-190A Small Cruise Missile — a combination that would let the Ghostrider find and engage targets at ranges where the orbit is no longer inside the threat envelope. Fifth, whether it works is genuinely open, and the honest position is uncertainty. A gunship that fights from standoff has abandoned the thing that made it a gunship — the sustained, responsive, danger-close fire that ground forces call for by name. What replaces it is a large, expensive, slow missile carrier with a howitzer it no longer uses. (Confidence: Analysis, medium-high)

The 105 mm howitzer is the visible proxy for that entire argument, which is why the decision to keep it mattered far more than a gun choice should.

The AC-130J is a heavily modified MC-130J Commando II — itself a special operations variant of the C-130J Super Hercules. Airframes are delivered as tankers and retrofitted with the modular Precision Strike Package, wing-mounted weapons, and gunship-specific systems.

Sensors and defensive systems

What actually distinguishes the J from every predecessor is not any single weapon. It is the modularity. The Precision Strike Package is palletised. Sensors, communications and munitions integrate as a system rather than as a series of bolt-ons to a Vietnam-era airframe. That is why the Ghostrider absorbs upgrades at a pace the AC-130U never could — and it is the single most important reason the platform has a future argument at all.

A sourcing note on fleet numbers, because published figures conflict. The original programme of record was 37 aircraft. AFSOC announced receipt of its 31st and final Ghostrider, completing the transition away from the AC-130U, AC-130W and AC-130H. One aviation source reports 32 delivered; inventory figures of 29, 30 and 31 appear across different reporting dates. The operative point is that the buy was truncated below the original requirement, and RAGE INTEL does not resolve the exact figure by selection.

The AC-130J is now the only AC-130 variant in US service. The Spooky and Stinger II are gone.

The Strategic Problem

Here is the argument in its plainest form.

An AC-130 works by orbiting. It flies a left-hand pylon turn around a fixed point, keeping its side-mounted guns trained on a target while it circles. That geometry is what delivers the platform's defining virtues: it can stay overhead for hours, it can put fire within very close proximity of friendly troops, and it can do so responsively, without the delay of a fire-mission queue or the transit time of a fast jet.

That same geometry makes it slow, large, predictable and low. Against an adversary with no radar-guided surface-to-air capability, none of that matters. Against one with even a modest integrated air defence network, all of it does.

The counter-terrorism era gave AFSOC two decades in which the geometry cost nothing. That era has ended. TWZ's assessment of the pressure point is the correct one: threats to AC-130s would be far more pronounced in a high-end fight against China in the Pacific, and recent operations in and around the Middle East have made clear that capable air defence systems are proliferating steadily to smaller nation states and even non-state actors.

This is the part most commentary gets wrong. The Ghostrider's problem is not that a war with China might happen in 2035. It is that the threat floor has already risen everywhere, including in exactly the permissive theatres where the platform has spent its entire operational life.


AFSOC's Answer

The command is not retiring the concept. It is attempting to move it out of range.

AESA radar

AFSOC is exploring an active electronically scanned array radar for the AC-130J. The command has declined to identify the specific radar on operational security grounds; SOCOM's Program Executive Office for Fixed Wing has previously described pathfinding work involving Northrop Grumman's AN/APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar, already being integrated across a significant portion of the F-16C/D fleet.

The capability gap this addresses is specific and significant: the AC-130J currently has no self-contained ability to engage moving targets at standoff range in any weather. An AESA would provide initial targeting and datalink updates for weapons like StormBreaker, plus all-weather detection at extended range and a general intelligence-gathering and situational-awareness function.

AGM-190A Small Cruise Missile

At SOF Week 2026, SOCOM's PEO-FW discussed integrating the AESA radar together with the AGM-190A Small Cruise Missile as a single extended-range strike capability. The two programmes had been proceeding separately; pairing them is the point. A radar that sees far without a weapon that reaches far is an ISR upgrade, not a survivability one.

SOCOM has also expressed interest in miniature cruise missiles small enough for Common Launch Tubes, alongside larger designs launched from conventional pylons or palletised systems.

Anti-ship capability

Reporting has raised the prospect of Harpoon integration. AFSOC's response was characteristically non-committal — noting that the AC-130J is a highly adaptable platform able to employ modular solutions, and that the command continues iterating to support the joint force in complex operating environments.

A gunship with an anti-ship missile is a maritime-strike aircraft that happens to have a howitzer. Whether that is adaptation or identity loss is precisely the open question.

Agile Combat Employment

In August 2024 an AC-130J landed on and took off from a stretch of US Highway 63 in Bono, Arkansas, during the Emerald Warrior exercise — the first highway operation by the type. The logic is fleet-wide across the US military: reduce dependence on fixed runways and established bases that would be priority targets in a major conflict.

Dispersal improves survivability on the ground. It does nothing for survivability in the orbit.

What was dropped

Plans to arm a Ghostrider with a laser directed-energy weapon — long described as suited to counter-terrorism and lower-intensity operations — were scrapped. That cancellation is a clean signal of where AFSOC's priorities moved.


The 105 mm Argument

The howitzer became the symbol of the entire debate, and correctly so.

From late 2023, the Air Force weighed removing the 105 mm from the AC-130J fleet, potentially beginning in 2026. The driver was weight and space: a howitzer and its ammunition consume both, and both are needed for standoff weapons. AFSOC framed the review as assessing the platform's capabilities to enhance lethality, versatility and adaptability across a wide range of scenarios while keeping it a vital asset.

In September 2024, AFSOC commander Lt. Gen. Michael Conley settled it for the time being. His position was that the 105 will continue to be relevant and that the plan is to keep using it in the years to come. As of late 2024 the decision was postponed rather than reversed. The 105 stays.

RAGE INTEL judgement: keeping the howitzer is the correct call, and not primarily for the reason usually given. The 105 mm is the physical embodiment of what the AC-130 uniquely provides — sustained, immediately responsive, danger-close direct fire that a ground commander can call for by name and receive in seconds. Strip it and you have not modernised the gunship; you have converted it into a slow, expensive, lightly defended missile truck that a B-1, an MQ-9 or a submarine can substitute for at lower risk and lower cost.

The deeper issue is that the standoff answer, if fully implemented, dissolves the platform's rationale. If the Ghostrider must fight from a hundred miles away, then the question is not whether it can survive — it is why it needs to be a modified Hercules with a howitzer at all. The Case For Keeping It

The counter-argument deserves its full strength, and it is stronger than the standoff critique allows.

Not every fight is a peer fight. SOF missions will continue to occur in permissive and semi-permissive environments where the Ghostrider's persistence, precision and psychological effect are decisive and irreplaceable. Designing the entire force for the highest-end scenario leaves it poorly configured for the operations it will actually conduct most often.

Persistence has no substitute. A fast jet delivers ordnance and departs. A drone carries a small magazine. The AC-130J stays for hours with a deep magazine and multiple weapon types, adjusting continuously to a ground situation as it develops.

SOF integration is a trained relationship, not a capability line item. Six decades of accumulated tactics, communications procedure and mutual trust between gunship crews and ground teams is an institutional asset that cannot be reconstituted quickly if discarded.

In the Indo-Pacific specifically, small teams operating across island chains and maritime corridors will conduct some of the most consequential operations of any future conflict — and having a Ghostrider overhead remains a real advantage where it can be brought to bear. The mission problem is getting it there and getting it home, not whether it is useful once present.

The modularity is the hedge. A platform that absorbs new sensors and weapons through a palletised architecture is far better positioned than one locked to its original configuration. That, more than any single system, is the honest case for the Ghostrider's continued relevance.

Indicators to Watch

  1. Whether the AESA radar and AGM-190A integration completes and is fielded, rather than remaining a demonstration. Programme survival past testing is the real signal.
  2. Confirmation of the specific AESA radar selected — the APG-83 remains plausible but AFSOC has withheld it on operational security grounds.
  3. Any revival of the 105 mm removal decision. It was postponed, not cancelled. A reversal would mark the formal end of the gunship-as-gunship concept.
  4. Harpoon or other anti-ship integration progressing beyond exploratory language, which would confirm a maritime-strike role in the Pacific.
  5. GAU-XX improved howitzer fielding rate — how many aircraft actually receive it, and whether the paused integration resumed.
  6. AFSOC force-structure decisions on the OA-1K Skyraider II, which faces a near-identical relevance question. A truncation there would forecast pressure on the Ghostrider.
  7. Whether the fleet is reduced below 31 in future budget submissions.
  8. Combat employment in any contested-airspace theatre, which would provide the first real data on survivability assumptions that are currently untested.
