Corrections carried in this edition. (1) RIX-2026-045 described the FlyDubai incident as a reported "attempt to down" an airliner, based on opinion sources. Mainstream reporting now describes an alleged attack on a pilot aboard a FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, treated as a suspected hijacking attempt. The earlier wording was wrong. (2) Earlier issues treated Hormuz as near-fully closed using tracker data last seen on 20 September. Newer reporting says flows are recovering from a very low base. See Middle East.

WHAT HAPPENED ON 3 OCTOBER#
Middle East (EU ▲2)
- A tanker was struck by a projectile near the Strait of Hormuz on Friday 2 October. The attacker was not identified in the sourcing available.
Confirmed(strike), attribution unconfirmed - The US is sending another aircraft carrier and roughly 9,000–10,000 sailors and Marines to the region, per a US official and Bloomberg. Hegseth called the US blockade of Hormuz "ironclad" and said Trump has "all the options he needs."
Confirmed - Trump said at a rally in Alabama that the war will end "very soon, probably right after the midterms," and that oil prices will then fall. He said "we lost 18" service members and that Iran has "virtually" abandoned its nuclear plans, warning of an "easy way or the hard way."
Confirmed(statements) - Iranian lawmakers advanced legislation declaring full control of Hormuz, including a requirement that commercial ships seek permission to transit. Washington rejects it. A separate Iranian lawmaker called for occupying the UAE, per Iran International.
Confirmed(legislative advance), the lawmaker's call is one person's statement - The State Department said Iranian diplomats were "kicked out" of the US after ignoring an order to leave. Iran's team called Trump the "worst president in American history."
Confirmed - Camp David talks: Axios reported Trump's top security aides held secret meetings on Iran and Yemen.
Confirmed(that the meeting occurred, per Axios) - FlyDubai: Trump said Iran will be "hit very hard" if linked to the alleged attack on a pilot aboard a FlyDubai flight bound for Israel. The UAE has opened an investigation into a terrorism link, and Netanyahu said the suspect had undergone "Islamist radical indoctrination." Trump said, "based on what I'm hearing, the answer is yes, but we're working on it." No public evidence of Iranian direction has been presented.
Developing - Hormuz flows: Bloomberg reports oil flows through Hormuz are recovering despite continued Iranian attacks, and that Iranian inflation is almost 90%. Trump has cited 300%-plus. This desk's last tracker reading (20 September) showed about one transit a day, so flows may be rising from a very low base. The two inflation figures cannot both be right.

- Russian attacks killed at least six to eight people and injured 83 across Ukraine. Kyiv's Northern Bridge was struck for a third consecutive day of bridge attacks after an evening strike on the Southern Bridge. Ukraine intercepted 131 of 157 overnight drones.
Confirmed(counts vary by source) - Five Russian drones, including Banderol loitering munitions, crashed and exploded in Moldova. President Sandu said Russia's war "is dangerously reaching Moldova." ISW noted it exceeded the last Moldovan airspace violation.
Confirmed - Russia's Foreign Ministry said it will continue "mass retaliatory strikes" on Kyiv and other cities and urged foreign nationals and diplomats to leave Ukraine, warning of "mortal danger."
Confirmed - A Russian strike hit a Liberian-flagged ship in Odesa port, killing one; a pharmaceutical warehouse near Kyiv was also hit.
Confirmed
Africa (score ▼1 to 92, coverage B)
- Sudan's army said it captured al-Mazroub, described as the RSF's largest stronghold in North Kordofan, linking army-held North Kordofan to RSF-held West Kordofan. It also said it repelled an RSF and SPLM-N attack in Blue Nile near the Ethiopian border. These are army claims, but Al Jazeera's analysis says the army has made gains in recent weeks.
Developing - The UN Security Council set a vote on Sudan sanctions renewal amid a dispute over the arms embargo.

ASSESSMENT#
The Russian Foreign Ministry's warning to diplomats is the most significant new signal of the day. Telling foreign nationals to leave Kyiv, alongside four days of attacks on the city's bridges, suggests Moscow intends to escalate pressure on the capital itself. Experts quoted by Ukrainian media say a 50-kilogram warhead rarely destroys a bridge, so the aim may be to disrupt logistics and morale rather than to collapse spans. That reading is plausible but unproven.
On Iran, the new carrier deployment and the Camp David meeting point toward preparation for options, while Trump's "after the midterms" timing points the other way. Both can be true. The earlier tracker data and the new Bloomberg reporting do not match, and this desk has not refreshed the tracker directly, so it reports both.
Africa moves one point because the army's North Kordofan advance is corroborated by independent analysis, though the specific battlefield claims remain one-sided.
